The Three Zones: Reading Life in Three Stages

The first concept every face reading student learns is Samjeong, the three zones. The face is divided from top to bottom into three sections, and each represents a different stage of life. Because it is hard to interpret a whole face at once, traditional readers first compared the length and balance of the three zones before moving on to individual features.

How the face is divided

The upper zone runs from the hairline to the eyebrows, the middle zone from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose, and the lower zone from below the nose to the tip of the chin. The closer the three lengths are to each other, the more balanced the face is considered, which is read as stability across every stage of life.

To check your own, look straight ahead without tilting your head and compare four points: hairline, brows, nose tip and chin. Pull back your bangs, since a covered forehead makes the upper zone impossible to judge.

Upper zone: early life and learning

The upper zone represents roughly ages 15 to 30. Support from parents and mentors, access to education and natural curiosity are said to live here. A broad, smooth upper zone suggests early opportunities to learn and a thoughtful nature, while a shorter one points to someone who gains practical experience early and finds their way in the real world. Middle zone: midlife and career

The middle zone covers about ages 31 to 50 and includes the brows, eyes, nose and cheekbones. Work, wealth, social standing and personal achievement show here. A long middle zone with a straight nose suggests strong self-made drive, while a shorter one suggests someone who achieves more through teamwork than alone.

Lower zone: later life and home

The lower zone represents life after about 51, along with family, home and relationships with younger people. The philtrum, mouth and chin belong here. A full lower zone and rounded chin suggest people gathering around you with age, while a short lower zone and slim chin suggest someone who stays active and keeps seeking new things later in life.

Reading the balance

In Samjeong, no single zone is "good." What matters is balance. A zone that is noticeably longer suggests that stage of life carries more weight, with bigger ups and downs or more important tasks.

Face proportions are largely inborn, but knowing which way you lean lets you strengthen the other side over time, which is the wisest way to use a reading.
